Thanks for passing this on — I sent it to many. My Sadie (dog) is due for her three year rabies in April. She is nine and I HATE having to give it to her BUT in Delaware they quarantine animals in a cage for six months! My neighbor who is an extremely wonderful pet owner and takes incredible care of her cats had to keep one of her cats in a cage for six months because the cat was two weeks over due for it's rabies! ALL her cats are indoor and NEVER go outside. This particular cat had a cornea scratch on it's eye from one of her other cats. She took her cat (which is 14 years old) to an animal emergency center. They asked when she last had her rabies and she told them she was due at the beginning of the month and hadn't been able to get her in for the shot (she is a cancer nurse and works very long hours). Well, they reported her to the SPCA and the SPCA did come out and investigate and left six notices on her door that they wanted to come in and inspect the cage and the cat. She was told what type of cage it had to be (she had to spend $500 to have one made) that it had to be in a window where the control officers could see the cat and the cage from outside. They came out two more times to make sure the cat was in the cage. Talk about insanity!!!!!!! Well, I have to tell you, it scared the hell out of me since I usually stop vaccinating my cats after they are two. I called a mobile vet and had her give them all the one year purvac, which you have to give every year. My cats are all indoor too but what if I have an emergency? I don't have room to put six cats in cages in a window! Delaware has made it so that you have no choice but to vaccinate your animals. It's the responsible pet owners that are penalized not the idiots who let their dogs and cats run and never take them to a vet. One of my pet peeves.

I did a bit of research and found that the quoted statistics are a bit off. Below is a quote from the official email sent around:
A quote from the Wichita Environmental Services website: "Rabies in dogs is rare. ....In 1992, the first dog in 22 years was diagnosed with rabies."http://www.wichita.gov/CityOffices/Environmental/AnimalServices/rabies.htm

I clicked on the link & went to the following link in search of any up to date statistics
www.vet.ksu.edu/depts/dmp/service/rabies/kansas.htm

There have been recent cases - albeit very, very few. This info is more relevant than from years prior to 1992, which looks good, but appears poorly researched.

I strongly support going from 1 to 3 year intervals and just want the facts to be accurate.

Ann
